Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890)

"I often think that the night is more alive and more richly colored than the day"

Dead for colours

The trailblazer of modern art, the holy Daemon of Blue and Yellow.
No artist has been more ruthlessly driven by his creative urge than Vincent Van Gogh. A painter of genius, his work was an incessant struggle against poverty, discouragement, madness and despair. His heavily brushstrokes, dazzling colours and hypnotic perspective changed our way to see sunflowers, wheat fields chairs, beds and krays.
On 27 July 1890, aged 37, he walked into a field in Auverse-sur-Oise and with a revolver shot himself in the chest. He survived the impact and died two days later. His last words were "La tristesse durera toujours".
Our favourite pessimist.
